MULTIPLE CITIZENSHIP IN UKRAINE: WHAT CHANGES IN 2026 AND WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Ukraine is taking another step toward recognizing multiple citizenship.
As of today, January 16, a new Law has entered into force, introducing a simplified procedure for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship.
What exactly is changing?
Previously, foreign nationals applying for Ukrainian citizenship were required to submit a written renunciation of their existing citizenship. This requirement has now been lifted — but not in all cases.
For citizens of five countries designated by the Government, the obligation to renounce their current citizenship no longer applies:
– Poland
– Germany
– Czech Republic
– United States
– Canada
Instead of renunciation, applicants are required to submit a declaration recognizing themselves as a citizen of Ukraine.
What remains unchanged?
Simplification does not mean the absence of conditions. Other statutory requirements remain in force, including:
– lawful residence in Ukraine for at least five years;
– passing examinations in the Ukrainian language;
– knowledge of the history of Ukraine and the fundamentals of the Constitution.
Multiple citizenship is gradually becoming a reality rather than merely a subject of public debate. For citizens of certain countries, this opens new opportunities, while also creating new legal nuances that should be considered in advance.
If you or your family members are considering multiple citizenship, it is advisable to fully understand the applicable rules before submitting documents — not after. The LBASE team will be pleased to assist you with this matter.
